《无线局域网》课程简介

 

 

Course Title:

Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN)

 

Instructor:

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering,

Iowa State University

 

Course Description:

This short course introduces the current developments in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN). It starts with an introduction of protocol architecture of the wireless networking. It discusses IEEE standard 802.11, WLAN applications, operation and management of Medium Access Control in WLAN, and the radio implementation of the WLAN PHY. The recent developments in IEEE 802.11 working groups will be addressed. The business opportunities and market trend in 802.11 products will be also summarized. Finally, emerging wireless technologies including WiMAX (IEEE 802.16) will be presented.

 

Course Outline:

Part I - Introduction to Wireless LANs

1. Wireless LAN overview - AP (Access Point), WLAN card, BSS(Basic

   Service Set), ESS (Extented Service Set), Distribution system

2. Intruduction to the standard - IEEE 802 family, WLAN logical

   architecture, MAC (Medium Access Controller), PHY (Physical)

3. WLAN PHY - FHSS, DSSS and OFDM

 

Part II - WLAN MAC Operation and Management

1. Station & Distribution Services: Authentication, Association.

2. Access mechanism - CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision

   Avoidance), NAV (Network Allocation Vector), timing intervals

3. DCF/PCF operation Timing, Backoff intervals

4. WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)

5. Power management (DTIM interval and TIM interval)

6. MAC management Frames, MIB (Management Information Base)

 

Part III - Recent Developments in 802.11 working groups

1. 802.1X and 802.11i: Security
